4 Tips to Jump-Start Your Job Search

Jump Start#1 Set specific weekly goals
Why: This will help you get and stay on track for your job search. It helps you decide what steps you have to take to get where you want to go and gives you a plan of how to get there.
a) get focused
b) review what needs to be done
c) plan out time – spend 10 minutes each morning prioritizing what needs to be done that day
d) mark off time on your schedule each day to devote to your job search
e) working vs. not working

#2 Get specific about what you want to do
Why: It helps you focus as to how to conduct your job search and what to put on your resume
a) ask yourself questions to identify/clarify your job target
b) decide on companies whose culture, people and values most closely align with yours
c) decide your skill set
d) write this all down and weight your options

#3 Think about your personal branding
Why: This will provide a clear, positive and powerful picture of who you are and what you have to offer a new employer. It will increase your credibility and give a snapshot of your perceived value. The branding process has been a revolution in the job search process. It sets you apart from your peers and establishes you as a valuable commodity.
a) decide your skill set
b) think of 3 – 5 successes you have had in your career
c) write a value proposition – this will become the cornerstone for your successful job search

#4 Have a resume that is a “10”
Why: This is your marketing document – designed to sell YOU. It must reflect your value, even though you are not there. It must be compelling enough to have the company pick up the phone and call you for an interview
a) A Career Focus – so the reader can tell by reading the resume if you completely understand
what types of problems you would be asked to solve for the type of position you are seeking.
b) Skills & Core Competencies – showing you have the observable capabilities employers
expect from the “best in the field” for the position you want.
c) Key Words – essential if you want to have your resume seen by human eyes once it is scanned
into a employer database.
d) Resume Format – one that is concise and organized, where every aspect matches your
excellence with the employers’ needs, yet is also easy to follow, showing your career progression
and other pertinent information.
e) Achievements, Successes & Highlights – show how you have documented proof of high-
impact stories, moving from the problem-solving to the solution and its impact on the bottom line.
The employer needs to understand the ROI he would receive and be able to use the resume for
negotiating salary, benefits, perks and severance.
e) Education – see that it is adequately reflected on your resume.
